What is Power Raking?
“Thatch” is the accumulation of dead and decomposing grass plants. Thatch is similar to many aspects of turf production – you can get too much of a good thing. Small amounts of thatch, in the range of 1/4 to 1/2 inch, can improve wear tolerance and surface resiliency, and reduce water loss and soil temperature fluctuations.
Thicker layers, particularly beyond an inch, often cause serious problems. Excessive thatch reduces the effectiveness of fertilizers, watering and pest controls and provides a good habitat for disease and insects.
Power raking should only be done in mid spring (by late May) since damage is done to the lawn and there needs to be recovery time before there are extreme summer weather conditions.
What We Do for Power Raking?
The crew will power rake the entire lawn area, walking back and forth in a similar pattern to mowing the lawn. This brings the excess thatch (dead grass) to the surface. Then we hand rake or blow all the dead grass haul it to a disposal site. And finally they blow off all the debris on the sidewalks.

Summary of Power-Raking
The best time to Power-rake in Calgary is April 1 to May 15. We do not remove the entire thatch layer, as a light thatch layer makes for a healthy lawn. If the grass gets too green or a deep de thatching is performed, the machine can damage the root system. Power-raking is important to remove thatch which promotes a thicker healthier lawn. Power-raking is recommended to do once/year. (We will not do deep power-raking every year for repeat customers, but will adjust the depth based on the circumstance.)

Power Raking should not be booked after May 15 as a general rule since green grass can be damaged.
